Create sales for paid apps

You can create a sale to offer your paid apps at a discounted price. When users view your app on the Play Store, they'll see both the sale price and the original price – known as strikethrough pricing, based on the conditions outlined below.

Set up a sale

Follow the steps outlined below to set up a sale for your Paid App:

  1. Open Play Console and go to the App pricing page (Monetize with Play > Products > App pricing).
  2. Select the Sales tab.
  3. Click Create sale.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to name your sale, set up the start and end date. The sale name will only be seen within Play Console and won't be visible to users.
  5. You will also be able to configure the type of discount you want to set as either a Fixed price, or a Percentage discount:
    • The fixed price discount will allow you to add the final discounted price directly.
    • The percentage discount would allow you to set a % off on the app’s original price.
  6. Click Set pricing and then select the checkbox for the the specific countries or regions for which you want to set the price.
  7. Click Continue. This opens the dialog box for entering the price.
  8. Proceed by clicking Continue. You will see one of two dialog boxes depending on your chosen discount type.
    • For a Fixed Price Discount: A dialog box will appear for price entry. Input the desired sale price using your preferred currency. Play will utilize this value to calculate specific sale prices for different markets. Select Apply to view these updated sale prices within the Create sale dialog.
    • Note: Setting the value to 0 allows for a temporary free ($0) sale, which automatically applies a zero price across all regions. Additional details regarding $0 sales are available below.
    • For a Percentage Discount: A dialog box will appear for entering the percentage. You may enter any number between 10% and 100% to apply the discount to the app's price. Select Set discount to reflect these prices in the Create sale dialog.
  9. Click Save. Your sale will begin according to the start date that you entered during step 4.

While you can specify prices for each region, you can also select multiple (or all) regions, provide a single price in a currency of your choosing and Play will do a one-off currency conversion to all the selected regions. You can update prices when desired. Currency conversion rules follow the same logic as today and you can see more details on that here. Guidelines and requirements

These guidelines and requirements describe how sales for paid apps work within Play Console. Please consult with your legal team to ensure features of the promotion, such as the promotion timing, is compliant with applicable local consumer protection laws.

Availability and pricing
  • Currently, sales can be created only for paid apps (not subscriptions or in-app products).
  • Your app's sales price must represent at least a 10% discount on the full price (in every impacted country). With the exception of a $0 sale, all sale prices must adhere to the accepted price ranges.
  • To create or edit a sale, your app must be published.

Important for $0 sales: A $0 sale is temporary and is not the same as permanently offering your app for free. Creating a $0 sale does not impact your ability to charge for the app in the future. If you create a $0 sale, your app won't be featured on any paid Top Charts during the time the sale is live.

$0 sales don't count as purchases. As a result, the number of buyers in your reports may drop during a sale. The following reports will be impacted:

  • Finance Overview page: Buyers table will drop to 0.
  • Finance Buyers report: You'll see a shift in all buyers, repeat buyers, and returning buyers.
  • User Acquisition report: You'll see a shift in Buyers and Repeat Buyers.
Timeline
  • For each app, there must be 30 days between the end date of one sale and the start date of another sale. You can change the base price of an app at any time.
  • Sales can be live from one day (minimum length) up to fourteen days (maximum length).
  • This type of sale can be contained within a set period of time, with a start date/time that can be set to the next day and an end date no more than 360 days in the future.
Strikethrough pricing
The following rules around strikethrough pricing apply:
  1. In the following 12 EU Member States and the United Kingdom:
  • Belgium
  • Croatia
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • France
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Latvia
  • Netherlands
  • Poland
  • Sweden
  • United Kingdom

Buyers would not be able to see your discount with a strikethrough. If there is a valid ongoing sale for your paid app, users will view the discounted price of the app directly, with no reference to the app’s original price.

2. Outside of these countries:

  • Discounts will be displayed as a strikethrough. If there is a valid ongoing sale for your paid app, users will be able to view the discounted price as a strikethrough over the app’s original price.

View and update sales

In Play Console, you can access live, upcoming, and past sales.

Update an upcoming or live sale
  1. Open Play Console and go to the App pricing page (Monetize with Play > Products > App pricing).
  2. Select the Sales tab.
  3. Next to the sale you want to update, select Edit sale.
    • Update the sale name: You can update the sale name at any time. Remember that the sale name will only be seen within Play Console and won't be visible to users.
    • Update the start date or price: You can update the start date or price on any upcoming sales. If a sale has already begun, the start date and price can no longer be changed.
    • End or resume a sale: In the top right corner of a live sale, select Stop or Resume.
Review past sales
  1. Open Play Console and go to the App pricing page (Monetize with Play > Products > App pricing).
  2. Select the Sales tab. If any past sales exist for your app, they'll be listed here.
