Set up Gemini or Google Assistant for your car

Note: Gemini is now available for cars with Google built-in. Compatibility and availability may vary by car manufacturer, language, region, and data plan. For more information, contact your vehicle’s manufacturer.

When your car has Google built-in, you can navigate, make calls, control vehicle temperature, and play music with Gemini or Google Assistant, even without your phone. You can choose which app to use for call, message, and media features.

Note: This information is for cars with Google apps and services built in. Learn which cars are compatible.

 

Opt in to Gemini

 

Gemini is available for eligible cars with Google built-in. Learn more about how you can use Gemini while you drive.

You can choose to upgrade your car’s Google Assistant to Gemini. This upgrade is optional, and you can opt in or opt out of Gemini at any time. 

In order to opt in to Gemini, you must first be signed in to Google or Google Assistant in your car and have a language setting that is compatible with Gemini.

When you start your car, you will receive an on-screen notification to opt into Gemini. You can either tap Use Gemini to opt in or No Thanks to dismiss the notification to opt out. If you do not pick one and instead tap elsewhere on the screen, the system will ask you again at another time.

You can opt into Gemini at any time:

  1. On your car screen, open Settings   and then Google and then Google Assistant.
  2. Tap Switch to use Gemini.

To switch back to Google Assistant:

  1. On your car screen, open Settings   and then Google and then Gemini.
  2. Tap Switch to use Google Assistant.
 
 

Set up Gemini or Google Assistant

 

To use Gemini or Google Assistant in your car, some features may require you to connect your phone with Bluetooth, enable notifications, be signed in to your Google Account, and/or have a mobile data plan or internet connection for your car

Important: In cars that don't have a data plan built in, access to online Gemini or Google Assistant features will not be available, but offline features will work. In some cars, you can get online Gemini or Google Assistant services with a hotspot from your phone.

Connect your phone with Bluetooth

In order to make calls and send text messages, you need to pair your phone with your car via Bluetooth.
Important: Settings and functionality may vary by car manufacturer, region, and data plan. For more information, check your owner’s manual.
  1. On your car screen, open Settings  and then Bluetooth and then Pair new device.
  2. Follow the instructions on your phone and car display.
  3. When asked to “Allow Assistant to temporarily upload contacts from this Bluetooth Device,” tap Yes.
Important: Some features aren’t available for iOS.

Enable notifications

To read and respond to message notifications on your car screen, you must connect your phone to your car's Bluetooth and enable notifications for Gemini or Google Assistant.

You will be asked to enable notifications when you set up your car with an Android device. If your notifications do not appear on your car screen after initial set up, try these steps:

1. On your car’s screen, open Settings 

2. Tap Apps and notifications and then Special app access and then Notification access

3. Turn on Gemini or Google Assistant
